2014 Modernism Week in the Palm Springs Valley

With all the amazing events throughout the Palm Springs Valley every season, it’s hard to keep track of things.  I’m constantly scouring the web and updating my calendar so that I don’t double or triple book myself—or worse yet, not be home for an event that I absolutely don’t want to miss.  And one of those must-do events for me is the Palm Springs Modernism Week, this year taking place from February 13-23, 2014.  You can be sure that I’ll be there!

As has been the trend the past few years, this event that celebrates all things “mid-century modern,” including architecture, design, theater, movies, and music continues to grow and embrace the many communities of our beautiful desert.  For example, Sunnylands (the estate of the late Ambassador and Mrs. Walter Annenberg) in Rancho Mirage will be open again this year for special tours of the home, the grounds, and the visitor center and gardens.  [Don’t be disappointed if you can’t get tickets to this—literally the hottest tours of Modernism Week—as the estate is open for 10 months of the year when not being used for its intended purpose as a high level retreat center for world leaders.  www.sunnylands.org]

Over the course of ten days, visitors are treated to all kinds of fun and festive treats.  Beg, borrow, or steal to get a ticket to the double-decker bus tours that give you a bird’s eye view of some of the best examples of modern architecture in the world.  Don’t miss the fun Pre-Fab Showcase and Modernism Expo.  There are also lectures and symposiums, musical performances and art exhibits, and of course you’ll find cocktails and more cocktails at a full range of parties—many thrown at iconic homes in the area.  Trust me, you’ll have a hard time fitting in all the things you’d like to do and see!

Modernism Week tends to pack out the valley’s hotels, so I always advise friends to reserve early.  As a resident of Rancho Mirage I’m a bit partial to my hometown resorts:  Westin Mission Hills www.westinmissionhills.com,  Omni Rancho Las Palma www.rancholaspalmas.com, and Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa www.hotwatercasino.com, so you might want to start there.  Be sure to plan ahead and order your tickets online asap so you won’t be disappointed and just about every event and tour will sell out!   www.modernismweek.com
