Every season in the Palm Springs Valley, I have a list of “don’t miss” events that includes my hometown of Rancho Mirage’s Art Affaire (which this year introduced the awesome new amphitheater at the Rancho Mirage Community Park), El Paseo Fashion Week in Palm Desert, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition—among many others. But there’s one that I truly wouldn’t miss for the life of me, and that’s Modernism Week! www.modernismweek.com
This year the 10-day festival of all things midcentury modern will be held from Thursday, February 11 through Sunday, February 21, 2016. Last year 60,000 people from over a dozen countries came to experience this valley-wide collection of house tours, garden tours, neighborhood tours, art and furniture shows, music, lectures, films, parties (and more parties!), as well as estate tours of the granddaddy of them all, Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage. www.sunnylands.org
Some of my favorite features of Modernism Week will be back, like the ever-popular double-decker bus tours that give you precious peeks over high hedges into some of the most beautiful midcentury modern and Spanish-style homes in the country. Local valley designer Christopher Kennedy will once again be working with a team of tastemakers on his third Designer Show House. And of course, there will be a slate of lavish fundraising parties, fun musical performances, a vintage fashion show, and house tours that will knock your socks off! But there are some fun new entries also. How about a cool, Cuban-themed dinner party by the pool—with 50 of your new best friends—hosted by none other than Shari Belafonte, daughter of Harry?! Or a trip down to the Salton Sea to tour (and have lunch at) Albert Frey’s recently restored North Shore Beach & Yacht Club? And I’m looking forward to attending the soiree at the Museum of Pinball in Banning, where we’ll be playing more than 700 restored vintage pinball machines! And the list goes on and on…
The good news is that tickets just went on sale. The bad news? They go VERY quickly. So my suggestion to all fans is that you check your calendar, get right on the Modernism Week website, and order. And while you’re online, don’t forget to book your stay at one of my fave resorts, like Omni Rancho Las Palmas www.rancholaspalmas.com, Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa www.westinmissionhills.com, Aqua Caliente Casino Resort Spa www.hotwatercasino.com, or the Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage www.ritzcarlton.com/ranchomirage. Vive la vie moderne!
