This summer has been so full of fantastic events both in Rancho Mirage and throughout the Palm Springs Valley that I only recently had the opportunity to catch my breath and check out the new and improved outlet mall that made its big debut just west of us off Highway 10 in Cabazon prior to Memorial Day.
Anyone who’s spent time in the desert knows that outlet mall shopping is one of the fringe benefits of visiting our little slice of heaven on earth. But what most people don’t know is that the outlet mall in Cabazon is actually two separate malls. The most eastern mall is officially known as the Cabazon Outlets (www.cabazonoutlets.com), and among its 17 stores boasts such name brands as Adidas, Puma, Reebok, Rockport, Columbia Sportswear, Rip Curl, Under Armour, Sunglass Hut, and Go-Lite. If all that retail therapy whets your appetite, there’s a Starbucks Coffee and an Auntie Anne’s Pretzels to sate your cravings. It’s a fact that this mall is planning its own renovation and expansion, with some 25 new shops in the works. Stay tuned for progress reports.
The most western mall is officially known as the Desert Hills Premium Outlets (www.premiumoutlets.com/deserthills), and this is the one that recently unveiled the 100-million-dollar facelift that took 18 months to complete. In addition to adding 50 new outlet shops (totaling some 146,000 square feet) over the area that used to be the central parking lot of what is now being called the East Village, a new car park structure with 1,100 spaces was created. Walkways are now wider, lush new landscaping has been added, and luxury brands such as Alexander McQueen, Helmut Lang, and Belstaff having chosen DHPO as the location of their first outlet outposts in North America. Other additions to the outlet’s roster include CH Carolina Herrera, Fendi, John Varvatos, La Perla, Max Mara, Sandro, and Valentino. The total number of separate stores has grown from 130 to 180. In addition to the new arrivals, stores such as Burberry, Prada, and Giorgio Armani have expanded into more spacious locations.
Across the street in the West Village of DHPO, mainstays such as Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Polo Ralph Lauren Children’s, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Levi’s, Kenneth Cole, and Gap continue to anchor the raft of outlet shops there. Rumor has it that an escalator designed to carry shoppers between the East and West Villages is in the works, and set to make its debut by fall.
Being the outlet mall addict that I am, I can easily spend an entire day here. Especially since there’s so much more to do in the area than just pay homage to the retail gods and goddesses. Please be sure to read my “A Full Day of Fun at the Outlet Mall (Part Two)” to learn more.
