My ferocious appetite for meat is well-known, so a visit to Babe’s Bar-B-Que and Brewhouse in Rancho Mirage puts me squarely in hog heaven.  Founded by the late Donald W. Callender (yes, the same gent who brought us the now-ubiquitous Marie Callender’s restaurant chain) in 2002, this eatery has had me worshipping at the altar of the roasted pig religiously since day one.  And under Arthur L. Vasquez’s expert direction as general manager and executive chef, Babe’s couldn’t be in better hands.

Serving lunch and dinner, as well as an extensive “bar-b-que to go” menu, Babe’s specializes in one sure thing: meat!  Its two rib choices are both amazing, but I generally opt for the meatier St. Louis’ over the leaner baby backs (just a personal choice).  Depending on how hungry I am—and whether I can head straight home with leftovers—I’m usually a big proponent of combo platters.  That way I can add short ribs, hot link sausages, tri-tip, or chicken to the mix.  Portions are huge, so plan on sharing starters like the deep-fried green beans or the buttermilk popcorn shrimp, and certainly save room for a dessert that might involve an iron skillet full of brownie overloaded with ice cream!

With a full bar and a beer menu that includes a half dozen site-brewed choices, Babe’s always ensures my friends and I are never less than satisfied with a superior, finger-licking good, gastronomic experience.
