I’ve been playing tennis since I was a squirt, but never competitively. I was devoid of the discipline needed to deliver the goods on the court day-in and day-out, which is why I’ve always appreciated the pros as I watched them both on the tube and in person at championship matches.
Thankfully the Palm Springs Valley is blessed to have one of the most magnificent tennis facilities—AND tournaments—in the country right down the pike from my place in Rancho Mirage. The PNB Paribas Open, taking place this year from March 3-18 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is one of the most well-attended tennis events in the world, with finals being played in the fabulous 16,000-seat Main Stadium. www.bnpparibasopen.com
The tournament and facilities were purchased in 2009 by Larry Ellison, co-founder and CEO of Oracle Corp, who also happens to own the spectacular 246-acre Porcupine Creek property in Rancho Mirage. (And no, sadly, we haven’t met yet—but I’m working on it!) Recent upgrades to this great tennis garden include additional courts, many with night lights, bringing the total up to 23 hard-surface courts.
Tickets go quickly for the Open, so plan ahead. There are all kinds of fun packages available for single days, multiple days, or the entire tournament. And if you’re visiting, don’t forget to give yourself plenty of time to hang out, shop, eat, drink, golf, and enjoy the fabulous resorts in the Palm Springs Valley.
