Kick Off Summer, Honor Military

Memorial Day is a time to reflect and remember those who have served the country. The three-day weekend is also the unofficial start of summer. If you’re seeking ways to celebrate in Rancho Mirage, let this guide you.

Friday, May 27

Start your morning with a free 60-minute guided Bird Walk in the Sunnylands gardens. No reservations are required for the 8:45 a.m. event. Just bring water, sun protection, comfortable closed-toed shoes, and binoculars.

Book a weekend getaway at Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa to enjoy the waterslides, meandering lazy river, a cliff-side hot tub, and a sandy beach pool. Or relax at the adults-only Azure Pool where the attentive staff will tend to all your food and beverage needs.

At The Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa you can dip into the Las Hadas Adult Pool or La Paloma Quiet Pool until 10 p.m. each night and the Las Brisas Pool is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Take time to play a game of tennis or book a tee time on the Pete Dye and Gary Player-designed 18-hole championship golf courses.

Get ready for your backyard celebration and load up at Gelson’s supermarket. Don’t want to do the cooking? Si Bon Belgian Bistro, The Slice N.Y. Style Pizzeria Ristorante, and Apong’s Philly Steak offer catering options.

Be one of the first to see “Top Gun: Maverick,” the highly-anticipated sequel to the classic Tom Cruise action film, at Century Theater when it opens on May 27.

Saturday, May 28

Relax at The Ritz-Carlton Spa with Gifts from the Desert. Treat your skin to the coconut body polish and coconut facial. Or uplift your senses with a locally made date scrub and a full body massage with Kukui Nut oil that will leave you in a state of pure relaxation.

Grab a ticket to “Purple Reign – The Prince Tribute Show” at The Show. Jason Tenner re-creates the blistering performances and raw energy of Prince, plus, there’s a tip-of-the hat to Morris Day and the Time. Or head over to The River to see a free live performance by Saint Steel Wood (7-9 p.m.), a local cover band that plays 1960s pop, rock, Brit Invasion, surf, soul, and country tunes. It’s part of the Ben & Jerry’s 2022 Concert Series.

Sunday, May 29

Dig into some sweet and spicy barbecue. Order up a half or full rack of ribs, brisket, tri-tip, or chicken with summer slaw, baked beans, or other tasty sides at Babe’s Bar-b-que & Brewhouse. Seeking out pulled pork sandwiches, wings, or Polish kielbasa? Head over to Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. Dine in, carry out, or get a meal pack for your gathering.

Join in the last dance at Sunnylands as the gardens close out the season with the Last Weekend event (7:30-9 p.m.). The fun-filled dance celebration features family-friendly music by local artist Alf Alpha. Get crafty with The S.C.R.A.P. Gallery and cool off with deliciously cold shaved ice. No reservations are required for this free event.

Monday, May 30

It’s a sweet deal at Ben & Jerry’s (12:30-6:30 p.m.). All active military or retired veterans that show ID will be treated to a free regular size scoop of your favorite flavor.

Quench your desert thirst at Dragon Lili Boba, Rancho Mirage’s new boba bar.  Sip on classic and creative tea drinks that are hand-crafted using unique recipes. Satisfy your inner child with a Pink Dragon, a cotton candy topped drink that’s a whole dessert in a cup.
