“Potter loves a challenge.”  That’s what I had to keep reminding myself as I started on a new exciting yet demanding design project for one of my favorite—and particular—clients in the Palm Springs Valley.  While meeting her to discuss the redesign of her master bedroom suite, she revealed to me her desire to add a Chinese flair to the décor.  Mixing Asian accents with her midcentury modern home would need a deft hand—not to mention a special retail outlet to find distinctive pieces that would satisfy.  But I had no doubt I was up to the task.

First off, I knew without hesitation that there was only one place to go: The Charles Townsend Collection.  Charles and his life partner of 40 years, Gordon Moller, established their retail store in Pasadena 22 years ago, where they sold furniture and accessories mainly to celebs and the movie studios.  After the desert bug bit them, they moved their operation to the valley in 1996.  A few years later they bought the building where their extensive collection is now housed, on 111 in Rancho Mirage.  To this day, each and every item still personally chosen by Charles.

Needless to say, I found the perfect Chinese antiques and accent pieces to complete the redecoration of my client’s home without any problem.  And while I was there, I made mental notes for other customers’ needs.  The assortment of special—and often one of a kind—furniture, lighting, and home decoration is vast.  While Charles and Gordon split their time between the store and their love of community affairs—Charles is active on numerous boards including the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and Gordon serves as a Rancho Mirage City Councilman—their right-hand men Frank, Richard, and Darryl are always on hand to help you cross things off your wish list.   Not to mention that they love a challenge almost as much as I do.
