Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert Hosts Kids Camp

With so many families needing a break from the cloudy coasts of San Diego and Los Angeles, and heading for the ever-sunny and warm Palm Springs Valley this time of year, it’s no surprise that the City of Rancho Mirage pays particular attention and offers special summer programs for children and grandchildren.

One of my favorites of these is the Summer Discovery Camp offered by the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert on Gerald Ford Drive here in our beautiful city. Even though the camp started on June 16th, kids from age 5 to 9 may still sign up—for a single week, or for the remaining weeks that are available through August 15th.

Camp hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. fives days per week, and the cost per child is $170 for CDMOD members and $195 for non-members. Each week is designed so that campers “experience serious fun through art, science, stories, investigations, and projects.”

The fourth of nine sessions—held the week of July 7th to 11th—is titled “Ready, Set, GO!” and explores the world of cars, planes, boats, and other things that go, go, go! Subsequent weeks have been labeled “Bright Lights” (bend light, make sun prints), “Design It, Create It” (tall towers and strong bridges), “The Magic of Science” (potions and wands), “Movie Effects” (costumes, special effects, zombie makeup, and a show), and “Creative Studio” (paints, puzzles, and creating a mobile).

I know more than a few friends—both locally and out-of-town—who will appreciate having access to this wonderful educational and creative outlet for their kids and grandkids on summer vacation. So I’m spreading the word high and wide that for small tykes in the Palm Springs Valley, the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert’s Summer Discovery Camp 2014 is the “in” place to be.
