There’s something big happening soon in the world of international pop music—and it all starts in the beautiful City of Rancho Mirage. Members of the ’80s phenomenon Culture Club, including gender-bending lead singer Boy George, have reunited for the first time in 14 years, and the band has just announced that it is embarking on a world tour in support of a newly completed album to be released in early 2015. But the best news is that the North American leg of said world tour kicks off nowhere else but Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa’s state-of-the-art performance venue The Show on November 15, 2014. Tickets are on sale now at www.hotwatercasino.com.
Aficionados and assorted other fans will recall that Brits Boy George and Culture Club co-members Mikey Craig (bass guitar), Roy Hay (guitar and keyboards), and Jon Moss (drums and percussion)—a multi-racial act with an openly gay front man—burst onto the global scene in 1982 with their plaintive “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me.” Their two follow-up smashes “Time (Clock of the Heart)” and “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” brought them the distinction of becoming the first U.K. band since The Beatles to chart three top ten U.S. hit singles from a debut album. In all, Culture Club has sold more than 100 million singles and 50 million albums. They’ve mined solid gold in every country around the world, and are even Grammy winners.
The fact that Boy George and his cohorts are launching their world tour in Rancho Mirage is obviously a big coup for the city and for Agua Caliente’s The Show—especially when one considers that there are only five other stops in the U.S.: Oakland and Los Angeles in California, Las Vegas, New York City, and Atlantic City. In early December, the tour moves on to the U.K.
No matter which of their massive hits is your favorite, my guess is that the guys will play it during their desert set. I think my absolute pet track is a toss-up between “Time” and “The Crying Game”…I mean, “Karma Chameleon”…I mean, “Miss Me Blind”…or “Move Away”…or, oh, never mind. I love ’em all! See you at The Show on November 15. I’ll be the one sporting eye shadow and a Boy George bowler hat.
