Recently an amazing organization came to my rescue. Dear friends begged me to babysit their six-year-old twins for the afternoon, explaining that they just needed a little “alone time.” Remembering the Children’s Discovery Museum in Rancho Mirage, I put in a call and got the low-down.
This amazing facility with over 60 hands-on exhibits is geared to the 2-to-10-year-old set, which was perfect for my boy/girl dynamic duo. For a small fee I could bring the kids in and expose them to a fascinating world of fun and educational things to do. We painted a (real) VW bug, I hoisted my pair of tots up on a pulley chair, and then we took the lie detector test, baked play pizzas, and spent way more time in the make-believe grocery store than I ever would have thought possible.
We brought sandwiches and had a picnic out on the beautiful grounds, pretended to get lost in the grass maze, and played tag until my legs ached. The kids had a ball and four hours flew by in a seeming instant.
I’d watched this facility being built and expanded over the years, but had no idea what went on inside or what the Discovery Museum was all about. Suffice it to say that if you have kids in the target ages, this is an absolute MUST VISIT place. It’s fun, it teaches without kids knowing they’re learning, and it wears down the little suckers so they are as mellow as can be. (BTW, they also have an awesome gift shop packed with the most amazing array of learning games and toys I’ve ever seen.) Now I know why my friends needed that little respite from their tykes. But I’ll be glad to take them back for more. I think I had as much fun as they did.
