For more than 10 years, the Rancho Mirage Speaker Series committee has invited provocative presenters to the desert for a one-night-only appearance at the Helen Galen Auditorium of the Annenberg Center (located on the campus of Eisenhower Medical Center at 39-000 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage). Known for an eclectic mix of guests that have included the likes of Dick Cavett, John Bolton, the late Carrie Fisher, the Bush twins, Jack Abramoff, Ashley Judd, and Captain Richard Phillips, the 2017 installment will not disappoint with the three speakers chosen to regale desert denizens with tales of their trade.
Kicking off the affair on Tuesday, January 17th is Rita Moreno, the amazing actress, writer, singer, dancer, philanthropist, and humanitarian. Besides her many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom—America’s highest civilian honor—Ms. Moreno is one of only 12 performers in the world to earn the EGOT title (for winning the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards). She will discuss her 70+ years in the entertainment business and how that has affected her life. For me? Ms. Moreno will forever be seared into my mind as Anita from the movie “West Side Story.”
On Tuesday, February 21st, Rancho Mirage will welcome Dr. Robert Ballard, world-renowned ocean explorer and scientist. As a National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence and a commissioner of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, Dr. Ballard is credited with the discovery of numerous shipwrecks, including one of the most famous of all: the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean. This is sure to be a fascinating talk that I know I won’t miss!
The last speaker of the season will be Supreme Court media expert, political science reporter, philanthropist, and Pulitzer Prize winner Linda Greenhouse on March 14th. After a 40-year career with the New York Times (30 covering the SCOTUS), Ms. Greenhouse is now the Knight Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence and Joseph Goldstein Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School. Her expertise and experience covering the Supreme Court is sure to elicit discussion as it relates to today’s political world. As always, a Q&A will follow each speaker’s presentation.
