Any foodie worth his or her salt knows that Rancho Mirage represents a gastronomic paradise for those lucky enough to live in or visit the Palm Springs Valley. If it’s edible, you can find it within the city’s borders—no matter what cuisine or ambiance you’re hankering for.
Heaven knows I love the formal feel of such esteemed eateries as Shame on the Moon, Wally’s, or Roy’s Hawaiian—to name just three of the superb dinner houses I often frequent. But sometimes, I’m in a much more casual mood, whether I’m entertaining current clients or just want to catch up while breaking bread with pals.
One of my favorite casual haunts has to be the Fireside Lounge at Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa. Located right off the main lobby of the hotel, with stupendous views of the lushly landscaped 18th hole of the Pete Dye Golf Course, the Fireside offers seating inside or out for an après-golf snack or for a full lunch or dinner. And the patio’s cozy circular firepit and abundant heaters ensure that even evening stargazing will not compromise your comfort level on chilly nights.
While I’ve often sat in the lounge simply to enjoy one of the place’s signature cocktails, I’m even happier when I can partner up with someone who shares my often considerable appetite. During my last visit, I had the opportunity to sample freely from the Fireside Lounge’s new Winter/Fall 2013 menu. Toasting to our reunion with a bottle of Napa Valley Duckhorn Decoy red blend, my comrade and I shared the Lobster Mac ‘N Cheese as an appetizer before diving into our respective entrees: the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich with cabbage slaw on a brioche bun for him, and the Green Tea Salmon with shitake mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and spinach for me.
If you haven’t swung by the Fireside in a while—or if you actually have never been at all—do yourself a favor and come discover what a pleasing place this watering hole is. And as with virtually every department of the Westin Mission Hills, the staff could not be more professional, pleasant, and eager to make you feel special so that the entire experience is one you’ll be sure to write home about.
