Going Gaga Over Glasses? Optica, of Course!
Although I’ve had a sunglass collection that rivals my stash of bathing suits, it’s only been about 10 years since I’ve needed to wear corrective lenses to clearly see the light of day—and night. So when I DID discover I needed to wear glasses most of the time, it was no time at all before I figured out I could find the most fabulous eyewear anywhere right around the corner from my home in Rancho Mirage on Highway 111.
So now whenever I get a new vision prescription—or just have a hankering for some hot new eyewear—I head over to Optica at The River. Optica is part of the Luxury Optical Holdings, which offers exquisite eyewear through 48 different specialty boutiques located throughout the country under additional names such as Scene, Lunettes, Davante, AuCourant, and Morganthal Frederics.
On my last visit, I was attended to by store manager Elizabeth Baker, one of the highly trained licensed opticians that the company employs to assist customers in choosing the perfect pair of glasses for their personal needs. The store’s selection is truly terrific, starting as low as $100 and heading into the stratosphere with frames that top four grand. No, I’m not kidding. Optica sells a spectacular pair for the pampered peepers made of solid 18k gold. It’s by Cartier, of course! (You’ll also find a more affordable Indian Water Buffalo white horn pair, too by Cartier, for only $2400.) But for much less, I found a few frames that suited my face—and my finances—perfectly fine. Their exclusive Morganthal Frederics brand is often one of my favorites. But I’ve also found gorgeous Berlin-made Mykitas, Prada, Gucci, and Chrome Hearts to my liking. And with about 75% of their sunglasses suitable for fitting with prescription lenses, I’m made in the shade with this place.
Elizabeth and her team are optically astute in knowing exactly what will work for their customers. And being in the company of Morganthal Frederics-wearers such as Whoopi Goldberg, David Letterman, Diane Keaton, and Madonna, I can’t imagine trusting anywhere else in the Palm Springs Valley with my baby-blues. Let me know when you want to go shopping for a new pair. And when we’re done, let’s do lunch!
