I’m not the most colorful crayon in the box when it comes to artistic talent. Sure, I did my fair share of finger-painting as a tyke, and tried my hand at paint-by-numbers back in the day, but for the most part I leave the creation of “art” to the experts, and prefer to pay for a piece that I want to put in my home.
But recently, I discovered a fun way to not only have a fab happy hour at one of my fave Rancho Mirage restaurants but also to come away with a painting that I can actually hang on the wall—one created by yours truly! It all takes place at Paint Nite at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at The River, where guests are invited to spend a few hours creating “masterpieces” while indulging in a cocktail or glass of wine, nibbling on an ample selection of happy hour specials (including their awesome $6.00 bar burger—served all night), and spending time with friends old and new!
The peppy people who teach you to paint have come up with a fun formula to help even the most artistically challenged among us to depict a predetermined scene, providing all supplies (including canvas and colors) and even lending aprons to keep your clothes clean. All you need is a game spirit and a will to try something new. On my most recent foray we created a scene of Joshua trees at dusk. Participants came from all over the Palm Springs Valley and the High Desert, with some even trekking in from Orange County and San Diego. Artistic results—after indulging in the aforementioned happy hour fare—ranged from the silly to the sublime, and all left with a sense of satisfaction that, yes, they too could truly be called an “artist!”
