I’m such a sucker for a super fundraiser—especially one as fantastic as the “Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines” event. Not only have the organizers done a heck of a job for the past 17 years raising money for the Idyllwild Arts Academy and all their ancillary summer activities, but the festival also foists a truly American art form front row center and celebrates the joys of Jazz.
As a tot, Mother occasionally took me out of the desert and up the mountain to expose me to the bliss of the crisp, clean alpine air, and I’ve loved it ever since. For me, Jazz in the Pines is a great excuse to cool down, cocktail up, and coo to the sounds of more than 25 solo artists, duos, trios, and bands. Three days of events open with the Friday night Patrons Dinner Dance and continue through two days and evenings of non-stop music—with everything centered at the charming campus of the Arts Academy, a mere stone’s throw from the heart of Idyllwild.
I’m wont to make a weekend of the whole thing, and the roadside scenery makes the one-hour drive each way well worth it! If you’d rather just journey there for a day, check out Jazz in the Pines’ website to whittle down which lineup is most appealing. For all the 411 you’ll need, visit www.idyllwildjazz.com. And don’t forget to look for me under the parachutes of the Main Stage amphitheater! I’ll be the one tapping my tootsies.
