The Westin

What could be sweeter than sitting with your loved one(s) under a canopy of twinkling lights at one of Rancho Mirage’s stellar resorts, enjoying good food, fine spirits, and magnificent melodies? That dream comes true March 21 and 28 at The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa when it presents its second and third evenings of “Grooves at the Westin,” the resort’s first-ever jazz series.

With David Benoit and Phil Perry kicking off the trio of Saturday evening events on February 14, the grooviest smoothness continues on March 21 with Smooth Jazz Allstars Gregg Karukas, Jessy J, Brian Simpson, and Michael Paulo, who will be playing outside on the Masters Plaza starting at 7:00 pm. Each artist in this quartet of soloists has his or her own style, yet all will come together to produce a blend of music never before heard. According to The Westin, pianist Karukas will feature his new release “Soul Secrets,” which made it to number one on recent smooth jazz charts. Saxtress Jessy J will delight with her Latino-flavored sounds, and pianist Simpson (musical director for the famous smooth jazz cruise) will strut his solo stuff, featuring tracks from his latest release. Finally, saxophonist Paulo (a veteran of the jazz music scene who’s toured with the legendary Al Jarreau for years) will showcase his fiery on-stage passion. Each of these is a world-class musician, and the luxe, intimate setting can’t be beat. What a night!

Oh, and let’s forget that as an added bonus, attendees can feast their eyes on the works of Los Angeles Bettie Grace Miner, who will exhibit her series of works known as “Grooves” at Westion Mission Hills from March 20 to 29.

On the third and last evening—March 28—multiple Grammy nominated band Hiroshima hits center stage with its mix of traditional Japanese folk music, Jazz, R&B, Salsa, and more. For 30 years—and after some 4 million albums sold—this group continues to bring East to West and vice versa. I don’t know about you, but I don’t intend to miss the chance to see the number one Asian American jazz band in the world presenting a very special performance in Rancho Mirage!

Tickets, available at or by calling 951-696-0184, are priced between $45 and $75, with a special $99 dinner package available that includes a three-course dinner, a glass of house wine, and reserved seating on the patio of the Fireside Lounge. Do, Re Mi, Fa I am SO there.
