Jet on Up to Idyllwild’s “Jazz in the Pines”
Every summer in August for the past 20 years I’ve made the delicious trek up into the San Jacinto Mountains to indulge in the cool alpine air and visit the ever-charming community of Idyllwild for its annual “Jazz in the Pines.” The event helps fund the Idyllwild Arts Academy’s education programs, which include music, theater, visual arts, dance, fashion, creative writing, and moving pictures, as well as the organization’s extensive summer programs. And on top of that, it celebrates a purely American art form—jazz!
I usually drive up with a gaggle of gal-pals from the Palm Springs Valley who, like me, can’t wait to hear the 20+ jazz, blues, and R&B acts that perform day and night on three different stages. (For the record, it only takes about an hour to get there, and it’s a gorgeous desert-to-mountain drive.)
In addition to the quality musical acts, there’s a wonderful festival marketplace where you’ll find all kinds of beautiful handicrafts, jewelry, and art—not to mention a wide selection of delicious food, along with wine, beer, and margaritas that helps to add to the festivities.
