Air Supply’s Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met in Sydney, Australia in 1975 on the first day of rehearsals for the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.” They became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and singing, and after the shows’ performances they started playing pizza parlors, coffee bars, and nightclubs with just one guitar and two voices.
After several years of performing, the duo earned a hit single with the song “Love and Other Bruises.” They gained international exposure in the late ‘70s when Rod Stewart invited them to be the opening act on his North American tour. In 1980, after their hit single “Lost in Love” found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis, the duo signed a record deal with Arista Records and released their first album for the label,Lost in Love, which was a major success in the U.S. selling over 2 million copies and producing the hit singles “Lost in Love,” “All out of Love” and “Every Woman in the World.”
Seven Top 5 hits later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive Top 5 singles. The subsequent albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. In 1983 they recorded “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” by Jim Steinman and released it on their greatest hits album, Making Love… The Very Best of Air Supply. The single spent two weeks at No. 2 while the album charted in the Top 10 and eventually sold more than 4 million copies.
In 2010 Graham Russell became a BMI Million-Air, recognizing 3 million performances of the duo’s hit “All Out Of Love.” In 2013, the duo was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association’s Hall of Fame. Air Supply celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2015 and continue to delight audiences all over the world.
