ABOUT SNOOP DOGG:
West Coast rap legend, Snoop Dogg, was born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971. His “Snoop Dogg” nickname came from his mother because she thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon. He played piano and sang at his local Baptist church, before starting rap in sixth grade. After graduating high school, Snoop was arrested several times for drug possession and spent time in prison. He started making music as a way out of his troubles and recorded early demos with his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G as 213. A track on one of these demos came to the attention of Dr. Dre who invited Snoop, then rapping under the name Snoop Doggy Dogg, to audition. From there, they collaborated on a song called “Deep Cover” for the soundtrack for the film of the same name; and Snoop became the key rapper on Dre’s hugely successful first solo album, The Chronic, in 1992.
After decades of a successful music career, he also branched into acting and appeared in several films, including Starsky & Hutch, The Wash and Training Day. He also made guest appearances on television shows, including The L Word and Weeds, and starred in his own E! reality show, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, in 2007. The series featured his wife, Shante, and their three children, Corde, Cordell and Cori. He was part of a sketch show, Doggy Fizzle Televizzle. He also uses his likeable laconic personality to good effect in a new venture for VH1, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, where he and Martha Stewart host dinner parties for various celebrities
His 13th studio album arrived in May 2015. Titled Bush, it was produced by Pharrell Williams. With the release of singles like “Peaches N Cream” and “So Many Pros,” the album shot to No. 1 on the hip-hop/R&B charts and debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200. In July 2016, Snoop followed up with his 14th studio album, Coolaid, which also garnered positive reception
Outside of music, Snoop has made investments in the burgeoning cannabis business. In November 2015 he launched Leafs By Snoop, becoming the first A-list celebrity to brand a line of cannabis products. In May 2017 Snoop dropped his fifteenth studio album Neva Left. He also released a gospel album titled Bible of Love in March 2018.
He is held in high esteem and affection by hip-hop fans worldwide, and is one of the most recognizable faces and voices of the whole genre, even to those who don’t listen to his music. He has the distinction for having the most Grammy nominations of any musical artist (17 to date) without having won one. But as Snoop Dogg shows few signs of retiring, don’t write him off just yet.
ABOUT WARREN G:
Warren G grew up in Long Beach, California listening to his parents’ collection of jazz, funk, and soul, nurturing a deep love for music. In 1990, he formed the group 213, named after the Long Beach area code, with his friends Nate Dogg and Snoop Dogg. While practicing with 213, and working a full-time job, the young Warren used all his free time creating his own sound and aspired to make it big. The trio 213 dissolved when two of its members signed with Death Row Records. Worldwide recognition as a solo artist came immediately after Warren G dropped the smash hit “Regulate”; a duet with Nate Dogg, which topped the charts in 1994. The accompanying album Regulate…G Funk Era (1994) went triple platinum with “This D.J.”, becoming Warren’s second Top 20 hit. The album sold four million copies worldwide, with three million of those sold in the US (certified 3x platinum). Had Warren G signed with Death Row, he would have been one of the label’s biggest selling acts at the time.
Warren G had signed to the independent label Restless Records by the release of his third album I Want It All (1999). The album offered a jazz-rock fusion style and featured a host of guests including Snoop Dogg, Mack 10, Kurupt, and Eve. The first single, “I Want It All” (US #23), sampled the song “I Like It” by DeBarge and went gold. Second single “Game Don’t Wait” peaked at #58 on the US R&B Chart. The album was certified platinum in the US. For his fourth album, Warren G returned to major label distribution; Universal Records released his The Return of the Regulator (2001). The album had one single released, “Lookin’ at You”, which peaked at #72 on the R&B singles chart. By 2004, Warren G, Snoop Dogg, and Nate Dogg had reunited their group 213 and released the album The Hard Way on TVT Records, which contained the single “Groupie Luv”. The song topped at #48 on the R&B chart. The album, however, peaked at #4 on the US Top 200 Albums chart, and was certified gold.
After the death of Nate Dogg in March 2011, Warren G released the song “This Is Dedicated To You” to honor his childhood friend and close musical collaborator. The song received positive reviews and continues to perform well. To honor Nate Dogg’s life and work, all proceeds from the sale of this song went directly to Nate Dogg’s mother, family, and charity organization. Although deeply affected by Nate Dogg’s death Warren G has carried on as a solo artist, working on multiple projects, and he has made multiple public appearances to promote various charities and musical venues. Overall, Warren G has sold eight to ten million records.
