Those among us who love and admire the performing arts are so very fortunate to live in the Palm Springs Valley. Not only do we get a steady stream of A-list vocalists, musicians, and comedians gracing our desert—we’ve got the world-class venues and stages that permit all of these stars to shine their brightest.
Of course, right here in Rancho Mirage there’s the state-of-the-art The Show, Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa’s 76-million dollar jewel that seats more than 2000 concert-goers (with none of them more than 125 feet from the stage). And a few Rolling Stones’ throws away, there’s Indio’s Empire Polo Club, which each spring hosts not only the twin Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival weekends but Stagecoach California’s Country Music Festival as well. And lest we forget, there’s the McCallum Theatre, which lies on the Palm Desert campus of College of the Desert.
A quick peek at the McCallum’s 2014-2015 season, which was just unveiled, reveals a who’s who of acclaimed artists representing all manner of musical, theatrical, and comedic genres. There’s Johnny Mathis, Vanessa Williams, Roger Daltrey, Cheyenne Jackson, Elaine Paige, Bob Newhart, and Neil Sedaka in solo performances. For a more international flavor, there’s the Irish Tenors, the Moscow Classical Ballet, the Peking Acrobats, the Vienna Boys Choir, Tango Buenos Aires, and Croatia’s 2 Cellos. If Broadway’s your bent, you’ll be pleased to know “Anything Goes,” “Guys and Dolls,” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It” are on their way. And who doesn’t relish the possum-loving grand dame of drag Barry Humphries (AKA Dame Edna)?
And trust me, what I describe is only the tip of the song and dance iceberg. So lettuce entertain you—or should I say, let the McCallum entrance you with its phenomenal upcoming season. Go to www.mccallumtheatre.com for the full Monty, so to speak. And see you there! I’ll be the one front row center, and waiting for pics and autographs at the stage door after the shows.
