Modernism Week has become one of the Palm Springs Valley’s signature events, growing and growing in both scope and popularity over the last few years. And now comes a quite clever way for the powers-that-be behind the scenes to not only draw attention to this great mid-February happening but to capitalize on its heightened elite status by offering a “mini” Modernism Week in the fall.
This year’s fall preview of the main event will take place from Friday, October 10 to Monday, October 13, taking advantage of the fact that Columbus Day Monday gives attendees an extra 24 hours to enjoy all that this long weekend has to offer. (For the record, many of my friends stay in the nearby Rancho Mirage resorts during MW, and I suspect with the recent opening of the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage, more and more visitors will be making the short trek to and from the majority of the events in Palm Springs.)
To give visitors and locals a taste of what’s to come next February 12 – 22, 2015, the fall preview will offer a wide variety of home, garden, and double-decker bus tours as well as a preview of the expansive Modernism Show & Sale, lots of great music, and parties, parties, parties! Opening night’s event at the Hacienda Cantina & Beach Club—dubbed “Aloha, Modernism Week: A Modern Beach Party with a Twist of Elvis”—will offer party-goers the opportunity to watch The King in “Blue Hawaii” poolside while doing a bit of the “Twist” or the “Pony” and imbibing in a cocktail or two. And that’s just the beginning.
A word of warning: Testament to the draw of these fantastic events, tickets for both February’s Modernism Week and the October preview weekend sell out extremely quickly. The big parties, the house and garden tours, the Modernism Show, and the double-decker bus tours go the quickest, and virtually always sell out. So to not be disappointed, get your tickets early, plan your resort stay, and come to the desert to enjoy all that the mod mod mod world modernism has to offer! www.modernismweek.com
