Modernism Week

With the high season in high gear here in the Palm Springs Valley, one of the biggest (and in my eyes, the most fun) event kicks off on Thursday, February 11, running non-stop until Sunday, February 21. Of which event do I speak? Palm Springs Modernism Week, of course. It’s almost a misnomer, since many Mod Week moments take place throughout the entire Palm Springs Valley—including my beloved Rancho Mirage. Tours of Sunnylands, the awesome former estate of the Annenbergs, are always a highlight. www.sunnylands.org  With so many things to do throughout the desert cities, the estimated 60,000 modernism lovers who show up are sure to be kept busy.

But it’s more than just tours, and more than just the gorgeous architecture of the late forties through the early seventies, that draw such a crowd. It’s also music, films, and lectures … art, furniture, and fashion shows … neighborhood, garden, and home tours … and one of the most popular events of them all: the double-decker bus city tours!

I had the chance to check out—in the depths of final installations—what will surely be a Modernism Week standout this year, the Christopher Kennedy Designer Show House, which boasts the design work of a talented group of tastemakers from around the country. Also not to be missed, among the many fun fun fun parties, will be a trip to the Museum of Pinball in nearby Banning. Cocktails and classic pinball machines. Sounds like a great combination to me!

Yes, some of the events have sold out, but there are still plenty of available tickets. And be sure to check out Modernism Week CAMP—the “Community and Meeting Place” headquarters for all things Mod Week—in the former Robinsons-May buildings on Palm Canyon Drive, where you’ll be able to rest and refresh (and eat, drink, and shop) between tours and events. And remember, it’s merely a hop, skip, and a jump to all the activities from my favorite resorts in Rancho Mirage, including Omni Rancho Las Palmas www.rancholaspalmas.com, Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa www.westinmissionhills.com, Aqua Caliente Casino Resort Spa www.hotwatercasino.com, or the Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage www.ritzcarlton.com/ranchomirage.
