I’ve long been a lover of all things Asian, whether it be home décor, traveling to the Orient, meeting wonderful people from that region of the world, or relishing the various cuisines. The communities of the Greater Palm Springs Oasis are very fortunate to have a vastly wide choice of Asian fare available. There’s Palm Springs’ Wang’s in The Desert, Thai Smile in Rancho Mirage, The Venue Sushi Bar in Palm Desert, to name just a few. But one of the most convenient—and dare I say “tasty”—just happens to be down the block from me at The River in Rancho Mirage.
Yes, I’m talking about P.F. Chang’s China Bistro. And yes, it’s a chain restaurant with more than 200 outlets. And yes, I don’t care, because I really, truly love it. It’s casual, it’s reasonably priced, and it can handle outings as intimate as a first date or as raucous as a bachelor/ette party, an office get-together, or a huge family affair.
I find it to be a great spot to go with clients for a casual meal at lunch, where we can sit and chat and not feel rushed while grazing through a work meeting. Lunch specials are filling, and the à la carte menu is available for all the special items you can’t do without.
Dinner dials it down a notch, and as it gets dark, nooks and crannies allow for more intimacy with a full menu that includes one of my favorite dishes, Chicken Lettuce Wraps. Don’t ask me why… I like the texture, the taste, and it’s fun to build your own appetizer! The Kung Pao Scallops and Orange Peel Chicken are a couple of other preferred and perfectly apportioned plates, but frankly, I’ve never had anything there I didn’t like.
Never ignore the competition, but always know that P.F.’s is right there waiting for you when you’re ready, hungry, willing, and able.
