RM Spa Updates

One of the wonderful fringe benefits of living in (or visiting) Rancho Mirage is the plethora of world-class spas found at each of our deluxe resorts. Three of these—Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa, and The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa—make the amenities hotel guests have so come to cherish available to locals as well.

At AC, anyone is welcome to reserve treatments at the award-winning, 10,500-square-foot Sunstone Spa, with no membership required. Spa Experience Day Passes are also available for $30, and include full use of the eucalyptus steam room, dry sauna, whirlpool, fitness center, and the private spa pool. Agua also offers a Spa Cabana Retreat add-on, which—for $125 Monday through Thursday, and $200 Friday through Sunday—permits you to enjoy the privacy of your own Sunstone Spa cabana and whirlpool. Food and cocktail service is also available upon request. April specials include a 20-minute Desert Sage Scrub for $69, an 80-minute Wellness Mineral Bath and Stone Massage for $195, and a 50-minute Micro Current Eye Treatment and Facial for $130. Please visit www.hotwatercasino.com/spa for all the details.

Over at Rancho Las Palmas, the spa’s recent facelift includes the re-plastering of the whirlpools in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms, as well as the upgrading of the two exterior cabanas (and their lounging areas) on opposite sides of the pool deck. The facilities include a stunning two-story spa boasting 26 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, and luxurious men’s and women’s locker rooms with a eucalyptus steam room, Finnish dry sauna, heated whirlpool, relaxation lounge with fruit and tea, complimentary lush bathrobes and slippers, towels, private lockers, and professional skin and body care products. There’s also the state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness center equipped with treadmills, elliptical machines, exercise bikes, machines, free weights, and more.

Potter and I recently indulged in separate treatments at Spa Las Palmas. Whereas he enjoyed the 80-minute Mirage Hot Stone Massage ($195), I was exfoliated head to toe by pro therapist Gabriela, who expertly submitted me to the 50-minute Tone and Glow Guava Scrub ($140). My friend and fellow blogger and I were so relaxed following our respective treatments that we didn’t want to leave! Ever! Don’t forget to have lunch poolside post-spa stay.

The resort just unveiled its revamped Club Fitness membership program, whose perks—for the $79 monthly charge—include access to the spa, pool, and fitness center; 20% off all spa and salon services; 20% off food and drink at signature restaurant bluEmber; 20% off at the boutique; and admission to all fitness classes. Whether or not you sign up, dear reader, don’t forget that Wednesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. is “Spa Under the Stars,” where you can bask in live music in the spa courtyard while you enjoy vendor demos, a glass of wine, spa bites, and other special poolside offerings. The $129 cost includes a 50-minute special treatment. It’s Happy Hour, spa-style. Visit www.spalaspalmas.com for more.

Over at The Westin, the most exciting sprucing-up to have gone on of late is the combination of two treatment rooms to create a Couple’s Suite where friends or lovers can enjoy treatments à deux, side by side. Also new is an array of skin care products—from the likes of IMAGE and German spa leader PINO—that are used in treatments and also available for purchase in the shop. Many new body treatments also incorporate the use of fresh honey. Sweet!

On my last visit, I tried out the quite intriguing and definitely groundbreaking “Hole in One Golf Massage,” which was developed as a desert first alongside The Westin’s Director of Golf, Anthony Holder. The therapist—in my case the wonderfully petite but powerful Rosie—uses two regular golf balls as an extension of her hands to perform the massage, which is specifically targeted to improve range of motion and flexibility, increase circulation, and reach muscles in spots heretofore unattainable. I dare say that this was 80 minutes ($220) of sheer bliss. The best massage of my life! Hands down. Or should I say, balls down? You simply must experience it to believe it.

The monthly membership program here is $99 per month, and includes a 50-minute Swedish massage or hydrating facial, a 10% discount on treatment upgrades and enhancement of services, access to the spa facilities (including steam room and therapy pool), and a 20% discount on a la carte spa treatments and salon services. As a special bonus, members receive invites to exclusive spa events, and can extend a 15% discount to friends and family who accompany them. Go to www.spaatmissionhills.com for all the pertinent info.

With all that’s available in the Rancho Mirage spa world, it’s no wonder you’re left flummoxed. Relax. Do as I do: Try each and every one of them. As often as you can!
