My favorite book nook in the entire Palm Springs Valley—the Rancho Mirage Public Library, of course—has a well-known endless array of extra perks for people who live in or visit our fair city. But there are a few more programs interested parties may have missed in the past that deserve to be pointed out.
Beside the plethora of daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly print publications that are available in our beautiful library on Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, dozens of magazines can now be digitally “checked out” online either onsite or from the comfort of your own home—free of charge. Titles include Dwell, Saveur, Audubon, Golf, Newsweek, Us, Esquire, National Geographic, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, and Prevention, as well as kids mags Chirp, Chickadee, and Zamoof!
And for those who love independently distributed films, the library also offers cardholders access to the amazing free program called “indieflix,” an extensive online library of movies. Thousands of films culled from more than 2000 film festivals worldwide (including Sundance, Cannes, SXSW, and Slamdance)—from the shortest shorts to rare and hard to find American and foreign features—are at your disposal at no charge. (Truth be told, this is my new addiction… I could watch films—especially shorts—‘til the cows come home!) Whether you’re looking for action, family, documentary, kids, comedy, LGBT, or drama, you’ll find a huge selection in each category. FYI, these films are not rated, so viewer discretion is advised.
Our Rancho Mirage local library’s varied programs, kids library, resource tools, and lending collection are first-rate, a not-to-be-missed place for both locals and visitors alike to frequent. Stop by, browse the book shelves, have a coffee and a pastry, and maybe even purchase an old paperback. This place is divine. www.ranchomiragelibrary.org
