Have you ever dreamed of skating on real ice outdoors under the hot sun in beautiful Rancho Mirage? Well, if you have, you’re in luck, because Renova Solar’s Rink @ The River was just unveiled on Highway 111 to the absolute glee of adults and children alike. Nowhere else in the Palm Springs Valley is this activity possible. One more first for our fair city!

The facility will make its official public debut two days before Thanksgiving, on November 22. To celebrate this one-of-a-kind desert attraction, famed skating star Richard “Mr. Debonair” Dwyer (80 years old, but oh, so young at heart) and championship skaters from the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club will be on hand to present a special Holiday Spectacular on November 29. The evening—which starts at 5:30 p.m. with Santa and a tree-lighting ceremony—will feature caroling with the Rancho Mirage High School Choir at 6:00 p.m., and the skating show starting at 6:45 p.m.

Through January 8, 2017, the Rink will be open Monday to Wednesday noon to 10:00 p.m., Thursday and Sunday from noon to 8:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Senior Skate—for those 55 and over only, please—will be on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

For $15, would-be partakers will not only gain access to the ice but be entitled to a rented pair of skates to boot. Bands and DJs will provide holiday music to accompany most skating sessions, and a special VIP lounge (replete with festive holiday décor) courtesy of soon-to-be-opened Acqua California Bistro (in the former location of Acqua Pazza and bb’s at The River) will be open for hot chocolate, beer, wine, and snacks across the water from the Rink.

In addition, a host of novelty skating entertainment and live music special happenings will be presented on various dates in November, December, and January. Please visit http://theriveratranchomirage.com/rink-at-the-river/ for all the information you need to plan your own holiday on ice.

Many thanks go to all those who made Renova Solar’s Rink @ The River a reality, of course. They include presenters The First Alert weather teams of KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 News, and sponsors CV 104.3 (including Jimi “Fitz” Fitzgerald), Desert Lexus, Hero, Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, and Vince Battaglia, CEO of Renova Solar.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to lace up and hit the ice. (OK, I lied. I’ve already tried it out, and let me tell you, it is fantastic!) I’ll be back weekly if not daily until the Rink closes up shop early next year. Look for me—the one with the black and white polka dot scarf trailing behind. 2016 U.S. national skating champion Adam Rippon ain’t got nothing on me!
