Even in our peaceful Palm Springs Valley, desert life can get pretty hectic, what with the myriad balls we all struggle to juggle and keep high in the air.  Which is why I’m all for one-stop shopping—and a big fan of any place where I can park the Jag just once then hop out and add minutes to my cell phone account, strike some items off my shopping list, meet a pal for a bite to eat or a Happy Hour potion, and wind down the day catching the latest greatest flick.  In Rancho Mirage, that place is called The River, and it’s a one-of-a-kind spot.

While it’s only been in existence for a relatively short 10 years, today it’s hard to believe we ever lived without The River.  Its meandering waterfront walkways replete with waterfalls and lush landscaping makes for a soothing setting in which to shop, dine, and be entertained.

Just some of the retail outlets represented include national giants such as Verizon Wireless, Bath & Body Works, Ulta Cosmetics, Optica, and M.A.C., and smaller, more specialized boutiques like Diane’s Beachwear, Hats Unlimited, Cohiba Cigar Lounge, Health Spectrum, and River Nails & Spa.  There’s even a Tulip Hill Winery outpost, the only winery tasting room in the desert.

Come mealtime, choices include behemoth chains P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, The Yard House, Baja Fresh, and The Cheesecake Factory alongside homegrown eateries Acqua Pazza, Papa Mario’s Pizzeria, and Babe’s Bar-B-Que & Brewhouse.

Specialty shops include Starbucks, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, and Ben & Jerry’s, while the cinephile in all of us would be lost without Cinemark’s Century Theatre 15 screens.
As for what’s going in to the mammoth space presently occupied by the soon-to-vacate Borders Books and Music, I know but I’m not telling.  Stay tuned…
