There are so many ways to stay cool in the heat of the summer in the Greater Palm Springs Oasis communities, and one of my faves is to sit in the chilly air conditioning of a dark theater as I watch a good movie. And what could be better than to do it at the 18th Annual Palm Springs International ShortFest, the celebration of short films that will take place from June 19th to the 25th at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs?
I LOVE short films. Compendiums are a fun way to see a lot of different movies in quick succession, and each work allows its filmmaker to explore themes in a very concise manner. This year more than 300 entries from over 40 countries will be presented in varying programs showing anywhere from four to 10 shorts. Genres will encompass comedy, drama, thriller, noir, and animation. Since the festival is sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which qualifies short- and feature-length cinema for Oscar contention), 86 short films that have previously been nominated for an Academy Award will be presented. This is a rare and wonderful opportunity to see these mini-movies.
And lest you think it’s just about films, in classic festival style there will be awards, all kinds of fun parties each evening, and, of course, the obligatory red carpet and Hollywood celebs peppered throughout the proceedings. Passes and individual tickets are available online and at the box office at the Camelot. Look for me at yet another wonderful world-class Palm Springs Valley movie-going event. I’ll be the one cooling her heals in the dark as I take in as many of the fab fest screenings and after-parties as I possibly can! www.psfilmfest.org
