Summer stock is a well-worn, esteemed tradition in the American theatre world from coast to coast. And in Rancho Mirage, thanks to our two award-winning resident production companies—The Desert Rose Playhouse and Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CV Rep)—and their estival offerings, comedy and drama are alive and well off-season in our beautiful desert!
Over at Desert Rose Playhouse, the only company in the Palm Springs Valley to dedicate itself to LGBT-themed works, audiences are being urged to accept their invitation to David Dillon’s “Party,” which returns from last summer. For 2017, the six weeks are bookended by June 23rd and July 30th. The story revolves around a great group of seven gay male friends who indulge in a night of cocktails and games. Since costumes quickly disappear in this production, viewer discretion is advised. Find tickets for both plays at www.desertroseplayhouse.org.
Meanwhile, over at CV Rep—following the roaring success of its last fully staged production, “Later Life” (R.I.P. playwright A.R. Gurney)—the company recently announced it will continue programming with live performances every week this summer. Included on the roster of 11 diverse events are three original cabaret shows, three classical music concerts, an Argentine tango production, two jazz concerts, and two one-person plays (August’s starring acclaimed film-TV-theatre veteran—and veritable star—Linda Purl).
“Due to the many requests from CVRep patrons to continue offering diverse, live entertainment during the desert’s hot summer months, when most other theatrical/entertainment venues are on hiatus, CVRep will expand this summer’s presentations to include a different musical or theatrical live presentation every week,” says CVRep Artistic Director Ron Celona.
I’m lining up now for a front row center season of summer fun. Find the full schedule, and get tickets, at www.cvrep.org. And long live live theatre!
