One of the highlights of my month is watching the postman drive away, then peeking into my mailbox to find the latest issue of Sunset magazine, that esteemed home and lifestyle publication that bills itself as “your guide to living in the West.”

So you can well imagine that when I perused the pages of this latest issue and saw that the editors had unveiled the winners of their Sunset Travel Awards 2016, I was more than excited. Then, to see our very own Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage voted Best Desert Hotel-Resort, well…I was simply over the moon!

According to its website, “Sunset, founded by the Southern Pacific Railroad to promote travel in the West, introduced the Sunset Travel Awards to honor excellence and innovation in the tourism industry across the 13 Western states, British Columbia, and Alberta. The awards recognize achievement in lodging, dining, cultural tourism, outdoor adventure, and other categories.”

The exact words the glossy used to describe one of the most scintillating jewels in our crown were “The Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage calms screen-addled minds with a generous menu of spa treatments that incorporate desert wildflowers and herbs and mineral waters, as well as the age-old rituals of the Cahuilla tribe.”

Now, I love spa treatments—massages, wraps, scrubs, facials, mani-pedis, and all the rest—as much as the next gal or guy, but it must be reiterated that RCRM is also home to two of the best restaurants in the entire Palm Springs Valley: State Fare Bar + Kitchen and The Edge Steakhouse. While the latter is only open for business in the evening, Executive Chef Bruno Lopez and his A-team serve three squares a day at the former.

If the fates have blessed you well enough that you’ve actually checked in to the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage, you know the superlative service each of its “ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen” provide on a daily and nightly basis. But let’s not forget that this property is quite attuned to residents, and welcomes them with open arms even if just to walk the grounds, admire the breathtaking view, or luxuriate over a cocktail (or two!) at the end of an exhausting day.

Haven’t been up the hill in a while? What are you waiting for? Discover—or rediscover—one of our very best.
