It’s not every day that one can take a cool ride on a 65-foot Dungeness crab boat, sip thirst-quenching beverages, and eat tasty appetizers with friends and family—all while being hosted by the animatronic Captain Jack—without ever leaving the Palm Springs Valley. But if you’re dining at the Crab Pot in Rancho Mirage, you’re in luck! This desert favorite is home to the one and only SeaVenture, a simulated vessel that takes you on a virtual tour from the docks of Petersburg, Alaska out into the Frederick Sound…on a crabbing expedition, no less!
This 40-minute “oceanic” experience is available to dining guests from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the hour, and can accommodate up to 20 “passengers,” either in separate small clusters or in one large group. It’s the perfect way to enjoy all the amazing food that’s available at this large and convivial eatery. Before setting sail, diners’ orders are taken. Drinks and appetizers are served aboard the boat, and then after the trip, each guest’s main course is served in short order at a table in the dining room.
Of course, seafood is available in abundance, with a wide variety that includes a selection of the restaurant’s namesake—Dungeness, Alaskan King, and Snow crab. Hearty eaters will want to indulge in one of the Seafeasts: various combinations of clams, shrimp, mussels, crab, Andouille sausage, potatoes, and corn on the cob eaten off butcher paper—mallet in hand—to your heart’s content! But even with a name like “Crab Pot,” there are plenty of other options for those whose first choice isn’t a deep-sea bounty. The burgers and sandwiches are big and beautiful. Ribs, chicken, and steaks will satisfy even the pickiest eater. And quite a few great pastas and salads are available for our vegetarian friends. Anyone with a sweet tooth is highly encouraged to share the famous Strawberry Rhubarb Homestyle Cake-In-A-Pan or the equally delectable Chocolate Crumb Mud Pie.
The SeaVenture is a great treat for young and old, family and friends, as is the entire restaurant experience. Whether on an intimate date or a fun, festive mass outing, you’ll find a place at the table at the Crab Pot in Rancho Mirage. www.crabpotranchomirage.com
