Biking, baby, biking! It’s all the rage these days…from casual jaunts through quiet desert streets to the annual Tour de Palm Springs’ one- to one-hundred-mile charity fundraiser to one of the most anticipated and watched sporting events of the year: the Amgen Tour of California. Celebrating its 8th year, this 750-mile, eight-stage race will take competitive bikers (no, I won’t be there!) through 13 official host cities, starting in the San Diego area and culminating in a final leg of racing that includes a trek over San Francisco’s famed Golden Gate Bridge and a 3,864-foot climb to the peak of Mount Diablo. And best of all, for the first time, it includes a route through our neck of the woods. The eight-day race takes place Sunday to Sunday, May 12 – 19, 2013 and will grace some of the cities in the Palm Springs Valley—including my own Rancho Mirage—on Monday , May 13, 2013. (FYI, that’s the day after Mother’s Day.) The local desert leg will finish at the top of the extremely challenging Tramway Road in Palm Springs! Since this competition draws some of the best bikers in the world, including Olympians, world champions, and Tour de France participants, spectators are sure to line the entire route and cheer their favorites on. I know I’ll be there! www.amgentourofcalifornia.com see 2013 Amgen PS Valley Route Map for the route through Rancho Mirage.
