Thanksgiving at Rancho Las Palmas
I love fixing turkey dinner with all the trimmings as much as the next guy, but for the last half-decade, as Thanksgiving Day has approached, I’ve found myself vacillating between preparing a home-cooked feast for family and friends at my digs in Rancho Mirage…and letting one of the many fantastic restaurants in our Palm Springs Valley do all the fussing for us. I’m happy to report that this year, a hungry dozen of us are thankfully spending a very large part of Thursday, November 22 at Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa. Now that we have the “where” and the “when,” we just have to figure out the “how.”
Rancho Las Palmas is offering two ways to spend this hallowed holiday meal this year. The first is to dive into the Thanksgiving Buffet, which will be open from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Las Palmas Ballroom, and which will feature an elegant buffet dinner decked with all the autumnal accouterments. There will also be live jazz courtesy of Steve Madaio. The price is $64 for adults, $25 for kids 5-12, and free for tiny tots under 4.
Another way to go is to check into Rancho Las Palmas’ signature restaurant, bluEmber, where a three-course dinner for $49 will be on offer from noon to 3:00 p.m., and where a four-course feast will be available for $64 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. John Stanley King will be providing the musical entertainment at the later seating. Should any of you readers be interested in either option, reservations are strongly recommended, and may be made at 866.423.1195.
For those opting to make the meal at home, Rancho Las Palmas chef Billy Deaver will be teaching his “Transforming Thanksgiving Leftovers” cooking class at the resort on November 24 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. The $45 cost includes lunch and wine.
Other fall events coming up at this splendid property include a Rodney Strong Wine Dinner at bluEmber on November 29 (6:00 p.m., $85 for a cocktail reception and four-course pairing), a Buena Vista Winery Dinner at bluEmber on December 13 (same time, same price, same sampling), Billy Deaver’s cooking class “Holiday Dishes: The Lighter Side” on December 15 (1:00 to 2:30 p.m., $45 for lunch and wine), and the December 20 Produce Market Showcase from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (featuring locally grown produce and a $5 Irish Coffee tasting).
I guess I’m giving up on the dieting this instant. The tightening of the belt can wait until 2013!
