The annual Hollywood awards season kicks off in high style right here in the Palm Springs Valley with early January’s Palm Springs Film Awards, part of the yearly Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Golden Globes follow before giving way to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Grammys, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and, of course, the Oscars in late February.

Here in Rancho Mirage, we have our own awards circuit of sorts: The Rammys, a host of prizes that celebrate local businesses and business people. Held this year on the evening of January 30th, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., at presenting sponsor Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa’s performance venue The Show, the event will honor Monica and Timothy Bradley Jr. with the Distinguished Citizens Award. Replete with Red Carpet hosted by KESQ Channel 3 News morning anchor Bianca Rae, it’s a fun and glamorous evening whose $95 per ticket cost supports the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce and the invaluable work it does year-round for its members and all those they serve throughout the Palm Springs Valley.

While it’s too early to unveil the winners, I can tell you that the nominees are as follows. For Small Business of the Year: Locals Choice Printing & Direct Mail, Pedal Spin Studio, Classic Creations by Debbie Lee, Desert Business Interiors, Provident Bank, and Rancho Mirage Florist.

In the Medium Business category, the nominees are Pieology, Elephant Car Wash, The Slice NY Pizzeria & Ristorante, VCA Animal Clinic, ServPro of Palm Desert, and the Law Office of Walter Clark.

The Rising Star Award will be presented to one of the following: Paragon Development-Rancho Las Palmas Shopping Center, Pieology, Hobby Lobby, Gelson’s, Norma’s Italian Kitchen, or Green’s International Market.

The Non-Profit of the Year nominees are Safe House of the Desert, the Desert Cancer Foundation, the Braille Institute, Coachella Valley Repertory (CVRep), Desert Arc, Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, The Living Desert, the American Red Cross, and the Coachella Valley Alzheimer’s Association.

Finally, the Business Person of the Year will be chosen among Greg Jones (Owner, Locals’ Choice Printing & Direct Mail), Charley Baltazar-Duran (Banquets Manager, Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar), David Bryant (Library Director, Rancho Mirage Public Library), Jim Murdock (Store Director, PIRCH), Debbie Lee (Owner, Classic Creations by Debbie Lee), Ron Celona (Artistic Director, Coachella Valley Repertory), CJ Graham, (COO, Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa), Ron Hare (Owner, Norma’s Italian Kitchen), Bonnie Barkley (Co-owner, Cello’s Pantry), Ana Jimenez (Co-owner, Agape Salon & Spa), Arthur L. Of course, all of us know that each and every one of the establishments and the human beings behind them are winners. As they say in Hollywood, “Just being nominated is an honor in and of itself.” See you January 30th at The Show for the Rammys!
