Peruse your datebooks, people. Get those credit cards out. And go online to reserve for two of the hottest tickets in the Palm Springs Valley’s annual calendar. Passes and individual passages to both October’s Modernism Week Preview and next January’s Palm Springs International Film Festival are currently on sale. And anyone who’s anyone knows that these two megawatt patron-magnets sell out fast.
Now, I know the full extravaganza known as Palm Springs Modernism Week—the one that boasts many events held right here in Rancho Mirage—won’t be here until February 16-26, 2017 (with tickets for that going on sale November 11, 2016 at noon), but that doesn’t mean visitors and residents alike can’t get an early taste with Modernism Week Preview! I mean, after all, the drive from Rancho Mirage is all but 20 minutes.
Presented this year over the weekend of October 21-23, it has all the markings of its big sib: excursions like the Charles Phoenix Super Duper Double Decker Bus Tour of “Palm Springsland” ($99) or the Premiere Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour ($85), the Modernism Show Early Buying Preview Reception ($50) and the show/sale itself ($15), and a fabuloso Saturday night cocktail party (held at The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five; $85-$150) that doubles as a fundraiser for the preservation and national designation of the work of Midcentury Modern architect E. Stewart Williams. For more information, and to buy individual tickets, please visit www.modernismweek.com.
From January 5-16, 2017, the star-studded Palm Springs International Film Festival will unspool at various venues throughout the valley. In addition to screenings, screenings, and more screenings—including world and U.S. premieres—there will be parties galore, none better than the fabled Awards Gala, which will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday, January 2. For more information, and to reserve your passes and six-packs, please go to www.psfilmfest.org.
And if you’re coming from out of town and want to feel like a real Modernist star during your trip, don’t forget that Rancho Mirage’s deluxe resorts—Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, Omni Rancho Las Palmas, The Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage, and The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa—are just a short drive away.
