Things just keep getting better and better in Rancho Mirage. Less than a year after the grand opening of the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage, the plan to launch the only six-star resort property in the desert has been unveiled. Where, oh, where could this stellar hotel reside? In Rancho Mirage, of course!
To be known as the Thunderbird Resort and Spa, the $100-million project has set its sights on the 24-acre vacant lot on Highway 111 across from The Atrium shopping center, just south of City Hall and the Rancho Mirage Cancer Survivors Park. It will include 125 hotel rooms, 48 vacation condos, a spa, a state-of-the-art fitness center, three glistening pools, and myriad winding walking and biking paths.
With room rates proposed at between $700 and $5,000 a night, this new hot spot is sure to appeal to what developer Richard Weintraub calls “the wealthiest segment of the travel industry,” according to daily newspaper The Desert Sun.
But don’t call to make reservations just yet. The project is still in its relative infancy, and must pass muster with the City of Rancho Mirage’s Architectural Review Board, Planning Commission, and City Council—in that order—before the first building permit can be pulled. Weintraub, and others, are more than hopeful, with the developer expecting to break ground in nine months or less. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to experience yet another amazing hospitality option in Rancho Mirage!
