Just to set the record straight, I am not the most delicate eater in the world. There, I said it. I love to chow down with the best of them, and even though I know my limits, I usually get exactly what I want. And that often includes a big ol’ side of beef! Steak is my downfall, “sirloin, medium rare, thank you very much.” But on a hot summer day, nothing quite beats a beautiful burger.
My newest hamburger obsession is Five Guys Burgers and Fries at The River in Rancho Mirage. This chain is super popular and it’s easy to see why. The beef is tremendously tasty and the topping choices are extensive, with all the usual suspects—including cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, etc. But there are also special, delectable extras such as jalapenos, grilled mushrooms, and grilled onions. If you’re watching calories, go for the “little burger,” which isn’t actually little but means you get one patty instead of the “regular’s” double serving. It’s still plenty filling. As for their great fries—made to order from freshly cut potatoes, bags of which you’ll see piled high in the dining room—two people can easily share the regular size. Jumbo hot dogs and a few sandwiches (including a veggie option) are also available. But for me it’s all about the meat. This is the perfect place to go before or after a movie at The River. www.fiveguys.com
By the way, Five Guys Burgers and Fries is located in the space formerly occupied by Johnny Rockets, another hamburger haven I’m wont to support. In a little twist of irony, Johnny has just announced that he’s coming back to Rancho and will be opening a new resto on 111 in September. Stay tuned! www.johnnyrockets.com
