So, a guy with a dog walks into a bar… Scratch that. Because this is no joke. Are you tired of going round and round the same block with your pooch? Have you had it with the dog park? Would you like to combine your love of all things K9 with your appreciation for cocktails? Well, then, I’ve got the perfect place for you.
Every third Thursday of the month, from 4-6 p.m., in its courtyard adjacent to signature restaurant bluEmber, Omni Rancho Las Palmas—the stellar spa and resort across Bob Hope Drive from The River in Rancho Mirage—hosts Yappy Hour, a time when owners, their dogs, and those who love them can come together for some socializing, furry-and-four-legged style. The $10 admission price gives you two drink tickets, and $5 of that fee goes directly to Animal Samaritans, whose volunteers are on hand to answer questions and to show off pups in dire need of adoption. There’s even a DJ—“Who Let the Dogs Out” and a dance remix of “Puppy Love” are oft-requested ditties—and reps from Petco offering specials and coupons of all sorts.
The last time I happened upon this doggie happening, mutts and purebreds alike were lounging about in the sun, getting cozy with one another, or playing rounds of Music Sits—where, just as in Musical Chairs, man’s (and woman’s) best friends go round and round to music, and when it stops, the last one to “sit” is out. Eliminations continue until one victor is left standing—uh, I mean, sitting.
Relatively rare are the places in the Palm Springs Valley where one can assemble with pets over a drink. So check your calendar, put your best leash on, and come on down to the next Omni Rancho Las Palmas’ Yappy Hour.
